Physical fitness is not only a vital part of a healthy and proactive lifestyle, it is also a great way to improve mental health and stability. Family and MWR’s (Morale, Welfare and Recreation) programs encourage fitness as a way to improve both healthy physical and mental activity. In doing so there are a number of viable options including weight training, cardiovascular exercise, yoga, Pilates, and other flexibility-based fitness programs.
Whether you are a Soldier or Family member, starting your fitness program depends mostly on the type of exercise that best fits your preferences. If you are more interested in increasing your flexibility and muscular strength, then you may want to pursue exercise like yoga. On the other hand, if you want to improve your cardio while losing body fat and increasing muscle performance, then you may consider resistance training and running. Regardless of which you prefer, almost any fitness goal can be obtained at home. What's more, doing so is a great way to fight off cabin fever.
If you are looking for resources to help with exercising and fitness at home, The Human Performance Resource Center (HPRC) is a great way for Soldiers and their Families to optimize their fitness levels. HPRC provides resources on a variety of health-related areas:
HPRC is a great source of information if you want to stay fit from the comfort of your home, however, if a gym is more your speed, you can check out MWR’s fitness centers at your local garrison. No matter if you choose to get fit at home or at the gym, both are a great way to maintain your fitness level and kick cabin fever.
