The “Dam” is the city’s heart and the site of the original barrier across the Amstel River that gave the city its name. Encircling the square are the Royal Palace, the New Church, endless department stores and restaurants. Musemplein is the main cultural center where you can visit the Rijksmuseum, Concertgebouw, van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk museum – all within a stones throw of each other. Another recommended location to visit is the Anne Frank House.
