The Parkstein with its remarkable basalt columns is one of the most prominent landmarks and an excellent viewpoint of the local area.
On October 5, come to the Tower Barracks Library for a presentation about the Geopark Bayern-Böhmen, located in the North-eastern part of Bavaria and Western Czechoslovakia. The Geopark has an abundance of geological, natural, and cultural highlights like rock formations, beautiful landscapes, medieval mining and industrial activities, and natural monuments.
On October 8, join the Tower Barracks Library for a field trip to Parkstein. The trip starts with a walking tour through the history of the volcano and of the town of Parkstein perching on its foot. The walk starts 24 million years ago, when the volcano erupted, leads through medieval times when the castle was built and the town founded and finally coming back to modern time. Visit the historical beer cellars, where geologists found breaking news about the volcanic activities just a few years ago. A visit of the volcano museum rounds up the volcano adventure.
